Jobs of a Different Feather

Having your first job at the ripe old age of 14 means having a lot of work experience that does not always fall under the more technical categories; however, it strengthened my work ethic nonetheless. During high school, I worked at a petting zoo for a large dairy chain rooted in Connecticut called "Stew Leonard's". I also worked at a local barn to help with chores and train horses, and even volunteered to help with lessons for disabled children at Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Center, perhaps one of the most rewarding things I have done over my lifetime. Listed below are some of the more recent additions during my college career. Any questions about my past experiences and what they entailed can be directed to the contact page!

Work Experience

Cornell University "Designing Technology for Social Impact"

Teaching Assistant - Spring 2016

Having taken this class as an undergraduate with a good performance, I was asked to be a teaching assistant this semester as more graduate students were needed to accomodate the larger class size. Two hundred undergraduates and graduates attend lecture to learn about how design itself can shape the way something is used, and consequentially how its users will behave around it. As an assistant, I attend lectures to help moderate during class activities and hold office hours to help students with assignments and concepts from the class if needed. I also attend weekly meetings to discuss recent assignments and their grading rubrics.

Barnes & Noble Cafe

Barista - Summer & Fall 2015

Before accepting a position as teaching assistant this semester, I was employed by Barnes & Noble in their cafe. My responsibilities ranged from opening and closing the cafe, to making drinks and preparing food, to taking care of customers and the stock in the back. Often, I was entrusted to run the cafe during rush periods (i.e. lunch) by myself, and did so without difficulty. I also helped to give advice to other new employees once I was familiar with the various tasks, and memorized all of the drinks, so as to make the entire cafe run more smoothly.

Cornell Residential & New Student Programs

Office Assistant - Summer 2013 - Spring 2015

As an undergraduate, I started this position as office assistant over the summer while I was still in Ithaca, and to pay for classes I took in the summer. However, I continued to hold the job through the academic years and the next summer until I graduated. My job was to assist any of the residence hall directors with whatever they needed to make their dorm programs run smoothly. This included helping any students or prospective families with questions about the housing options at Cornell, creating posters for events, maintaining the office space, and inputting forms and information for incoming students. I also helped to start, and organize, the social media sites of the different dorms and the umbrella residential program, and aided in the use of the new software to create the web pages for each house.

WVBR, Cornell Radio

DJ - Fall 2013 & Spring 2014

Cornell has their own rock radio station that plays music 24/7, with students as the main coordinators, guest performers, and DJ's. My junior year I learned the inner workings of the radio station and its equipment, and was a DJ for the late night slots every other week or so. It was interesting to see all of the preparation that went into each hour of music, and it was great to learn from and interact with the other students. Conversing with local callers was also exciting, as I got a better perspective on the people I lived next to each day.

Cornell AAIV

Small Group Leader - Fall 2012 & Spring 2013

After joining this Christian intervarsity freshmen year, I found that the people I met were encouraging, positive, and extremely compelling. Wanting to give back to this community, I became a small group leader my sophomore year. As a leader, I held weekly meetings consisting of five to ten people in which we discussed our lives as undergraduates and how we could help each other become our better selves within an academic and social environment. I would also prepare readings and discussions of passages from religious readings to help inspire more comfortable and outgoing conversations so that all members could benefit from the meetings.
